Low Level Laser Therapy
Gentle laser light used to support healing and comfort in a specific area, priced by the number of areas treated.
What it is
Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) uses low-energy laser light to support the body's own repair processes. Light in roughly the 600 to 1200 nanometre range passes into tissue rather than heating or cutting it; the clinic's device works at 1064nm, and laser light is used rather than a lamp because it is more focused and can be pulsed.
The light is absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase, part of the energy-producing chain inside your cells' mitochondria, which supports the production of ATP, the unit of energy cells run on. Cells with more energy available are better able to do their normal work of repair.
It is not a substitute for medical assessment or treatment of an underlying condition. Dr Frances sees you first to work out whether it is appropriate for you and what else may be needed.
Who it suits
Used to support recovery and comfort in a defined area, most often for jaw joint (TMJ) pain, slow-healing wounds and ulcers, scars, carpal tunnel discomfort, sprains, tendon pain, neck and back pain, sore joints, mouth soreness after cancer treatment (mucositis), and long-standing sinus trouble. Not suitable if you are taking a medicine that makes you sensitive to light, and it is not used over the thyroid gland or over a child's growing joints.
Benefits and results
- Supports the tissue's own repair and regeneration
- Can help settle inflammation and swelling in the treated area
- Supports collagen production, which matters in wound and scar healing
- Often eases discomfort in the treated area
- Comfortable and non-invasive, with nothing to recover from
What to expect
Treatment begins with a medical consultation so Dr Frances can assess the problem and confirm laser is a sensible part of the plan. A session takes about 30 minutes. The handpiece is held over the area and you feel little or nothing; there is no downtime and you carry on with your day afterwards.
Sessions are usually every five to seven days. Most problems need somewhere between one and five sessions, and your response is reviewed as you go rather than a course being sold up front. Individual results vary.
Cost
Priced by the number of areas treated, from $120 per session. Your consultation and plan are confirmed with Dr Frances first.
Common questions
Does it hurt?+
No. The light is low energy, so most people feel nothing at all, and some feel a mild warmth over the area.
How many sessions will I need?+
Usually between one and five, spaced five to seven days apart, and it depends on the problem. Your response is reviewed as you go.
Is it the same as the lasers used on skin?+
No. Skin lasers such as Laser Genesis work by heating tissue in a controlled way. Low Level Laser Therapy is deliberately low energy and does not heat or mark the skin.
Who should not have it?+
It is avoided if you are taking a medicine that makes you sensitive to light, over the thyroid gland, and over the growing joints of children. Dr Frances checks this with you at your consultation.
