Sun and ageing is a dangerous combination
Research has shown that normal ageing skin develops fine wrinkles, looseness and non-cancerous growths. If you add the effects of sun exposure to this, you get:
- deeper wrinkles;
- mottled pigmentation;
- dryness and sallowness of the skin;
- red veins;
- thinning of the skin;
- a leathery look;
- solar keratoses (scaly pre-cancerous spots); and
- skin cancers.
If left untreated, rough, dry, scaly and sun-damaged skin can turn into skin cancer and we know that up to 20% of solar keratoses cases turn into skin cancers too.
Skin cell turnover decreases with age, so to help the skin become healthier, you need to increase cell turnover, thicken the stratum corneum (top layers of the skin) and improve the barrier ability of the skin and also skin acidity. It’s also important to decrease skin water loss and increase ceramides, phospholipids and free fatty acids which give the skin its plumpness and suppleness.
Sunblock with moisturiser protects skin
To do this and to protect the skin, no matter if it’s only aged or aged as well as sun-damaged, you first need a good sunblock with moisturiser and, if possible, some antioxidants in it as well.
This is what Allmedic® Sunscreen with moisturiser and antioxidants offers. It has the ability to weaken UV radiation by absorbing UV in between cells and converting it into specific chemicals that limit harm.
The sunblock attaches itself to the stratum corneum (top layers of the skin) and thus helps to reflect UV radiation. The Allmedic® sunscreen has both physical and chemical sunblockers, so you know you will completely block out even the most harmful UV rays.
Preventing oxydative stress
The body, through internal metabolic processes and exposure to the external environment, suffers what is called ‘oxidative stress’. This is damage to the body tissues from toxic substances, the so-called ‘free radicals’. The same thing happens to the skin when it is exposed to UV rays. Sun exposure is the biggest source of oxidative stress and free radicals which damage the skin.
The body uses antioxidants to neutralise these free radicals. Allmedic® Sunblock contains Resveratrol, a powerful antioxidant. It also contains Niacinamide, which boosts the immune system of the skin and prevents the formation of skin cancer.
Another important process that helps make the skin more youthful and protects it is exfoliation. The Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) exfoliation process causes breakdown of desmosomes (like a glue), which hold skin cells together. The process also increases cellular turnover and thicken the stratum corneum (top layer of the skin) and thus acts as a natural sun protectant. This makes the skin more supple and youthful. The Allmedic® products focussed on this aspect of skin care are called Face Repair and Body Repair. An important ingredient in the Repair products is also lactic acid. Its role is to put moisture back into skin.
A healthier alternative for soap
It’s also important to keep the skin’s acidity (or pH) fairly low. Soap and soap-like products cause dryness, loss of moisture and a loss of acidity to the skin. Once this happens, not only is moisture lost, but there is an increase in a special enzyme called Chymotryptic enzyme. Chymotryptic enzyme increases skin cancers in vulnerable skin. So not only does soap dry out the skin, it can increase the risk of skin cancers… so we recommend that you avoid soap.
To help with this, Allmedic® has produced a skin cleanser that does not contain harmful chemicals like Sodium laureal sulphate, Propylene Glycol, or Parabens. It cleanses the skin as well as protects it. The Allmedic® Skin Cleanser can be used as a soap, make-up remover, shaving cream and shampoo.
