Botulinum Toxin for Migraine
Migraine can run in families, and is often associated with food sensitivities, inflammation, allergy, irritable bowel syndrome, fatigue, and PMS.
Dr Pitsilis’ approach to helping migraine uses diet, digestion and lifestyle first. She then corrects any biochemical abnormalities like low zinc, vitamin B12, iron, Vitamin D, etc. Supplements that help migraine include magnesium, vitamin B2, melatonin, fish oil and co enzyme Q10. Correcting hormonal imbalances can make a substantial difference if the migraines are related to the menstrual cycle or menopause. Of course, stress can have a lot to do with migraine and helping in this area is also useful.
Botulinum Toxin has been used for over 30 years in medicine in such conditions as neck and eye muscle spasm and cerebral palsy and stroke spasticity. It became a cosmetic treatment when it was noticed that when treating the eye muscle spasm, the wrinkles disappeared. A few years later, it was noted that headache and migraine also resolved. Botulinum has been used for headache for many years. Dr Pitsilis has used it for migraine for several years, in association with the above interventions.
