Lip Treatments

Dermal fillers can address some of the most common concerns women have in relation to their lips. At Skinfresh Clinic our preference for dermal fillers is Restylane® as it is highly researched and has been in the market for over 10 years.

Some common concerns include:

• Upper lip too thin or turned in
• Lips generally losing volume with age
• Reduced definition of lip borders
• Lines above, below, and around lips
• Desire fuller lips
• Concern of shape of lips.

Dermal fillers can include collagen or hyaluronic acid. The most popular filler to use for the lips is hyaluronic acid because it is clear, soft, and is versatile – it can be used in the body of the lips as well as the lines. Hyaluronic acid is also used as a filler anywhere else in the face, such as Nasolabial Lines (the lines from nose to corner of mouth) and Marionette Lines (the lines from corners of mouth downwards). Hyaluronic acid is one of the substances, along with collagen, that is found in the skin of all animals.

Does Restylane really work?

Yes. Restylane works – this, and its safety record have been clinically documented and supported by robust clinical studies spanning over 10 years. Furthermore, since 1996, over seven million Restylane treatments have been successfully performed worldwide. Restylane is one of the most tried and tested dermal fillers and is recognized as the benchmark for safety.

Is Restylane FDA approved?

Yes. Restylane was the first hyaluronic acid based dermal filler to be approved by the FDA in 2003.

How long does swelling normally last after a lip enhancement?

Normally the swelling resolves within a week of Restylane injection into the lips. The swelling is not an immunological reaction and is part of the normal course of events.

How long does a treatment last?

Lips: In general, follow-up treatment is needed after about 6-10 months. This depends on many factors, such as the structure of the skin, lifestyle, age, the degree of perfection required by the patient. Clinical experience indicates that follow-up treatment will add to the duration.

Are there any side effects or adverse reactions?

After the injection some common injection-related reactions might occur. These reactions include redness, swelling, pain, itching, bruising and tenderness at the site. They have generally been described as mild to moderate and typically resolve spontaneously within a few days after injection.

The risk of an allergic reaction is 1/2000 and can occur at the time, or up to 4 weeks later.

Who should not have Restylane treatment?

Patients with skin disorders, Scleroderma, are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a history of allergy or tendency to bruising or bleeding should be carefully considered before proceeding with Restylane treatment. These matters should be discussed with the patient at the pretreatment consultation.

Can Restylane be used for patients who have undergone laser treatment or chemical peeling?

Yes, but we recommend waiting until the treated area is totally healed and the skin is back to normal.

What pretreatment guidance should be given to patients before a Restylane treatment?

Patients should be advised to discontinue aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, St. John’s Wort, and high doses of vitamin E in advance of treatment, as these can increase bruising or bleeding at the injection site. Previous eruptions of herpes simplex can be triggered by needle insertion, but appropriate prescription drugs can minimize the risk.

Are there any known drug interactions?

There is no interaction with commonly used drugs.

Is pain relief recommended?

The lips are a highly sensitive part of the body and therefore anesthesia is usually required before treatment. A local anesthetic cream can be applied to the area to be injected. Dr Pitsilis will usually recommend a dental nerve block, especially if it’s your first treatment.

Dr Pitsilis is an experienced and fully trained injector of the lips and face. You can feel confident that she will discuss all your concerns and recommend the most suitable treatment.
