Fungal Toenail
Do you have thickened toenails that are distorted in shape, brittle, crumbly and ragged looking? You most likely have a fungal toenail infection.
This problem is a source of unhappiness for many people because it can be difficult to clear up and causes embarrassment.
Our Laser Genesis treatment has revolutionised the eradication of this problem.
What is a fungal nail infection?
This is an infection of the finger, or more likely, the toenails by a fungal organism. Fungal nail infection can sneak up on you without warning, slowly and without any real symptoms. In the case of toenails, it can often be associated with athletes foot (Tinea Pedis).
Fungal nail infection seems to be more likely as people age, in males, and in those with health problems like diabetes, excessive sweating, and immune deficiencies. Funguses love warm, moist environments so for most people, it can just be associated with moisture, like swimming pools, showers and sweaty feet.
What are the treatments available?
Lacquer or creams on the skin are around 10% successful. Drug therapy is around 50% successful and carries with it the risk of side effects and the need for blood tests to monitor for any problems.
How does Laser Genesis treatment compare with other treatments available?
Low-level laser therapy like Laser Genesis has been researched and found to be 70-90% successful over 1-3 treatments.
What to expect during a Laser Genesis treatment for fungal nail infection?
At your first visit, a test is checked to confirm the fungal infection. Then we recommend a treatment with the laser that covers all of the toenails in the treatment session. This is important, because fungal nail infections can spread easily.
How does Laser Genesis treatment feel?
It is not painful. The laser gently heats the nail and it feels like the nails are basking in the sun.
What are the possible side effects?
This is a walk in – walk out procedure with no down time. You can return to work immediately. During the treatment, if it becomes a bit warm for you, a mention to the laser nurse will result in an adjustment.
What to expect after a Laser Genesis fungal nail infection treatment.
You will be advised about after care to increase your chances of successful eradication of the fungal infection. At the review visit 3-4 months later, we check for success by looking for healthy nails starting to grow out. If not, a retreatment is needed.
Fingernails grow at the rate of around 3mm per month and take 6 months to grow out. Toenails grow around 1mm per month, so take 12-18 months to grow out. In addition to that, diseased nails grow more slowly, and this is why the reviews are every few months.
